The Institution

Where research meets delivery.

The Center for Economics & Foreign Affairs studies what strengthens national economic capacity. Applied America is the division that acts on it — carrying a research priority through the development work that makes it a project.

01

The relationship

Analysis that does not stop at the report.

Most institutions that study economic capacity end at recommendation. CEFA established Applied America to close that gap — to carry a priority identified in research through the development work required to make it real. Applied America operates under CEFA’s governance as a nonprofit division: CEFA supplies the analytical grounding and the policy context, Applied America the development discipline and the project work.

The research is published, which is what makes the claim checkable rather than flattering. It is also published with its failures attached. The State Development Index is the largest piece of original analysis this site publishes, and its own page reports that its correlation with domestic migration across the 51 jurisdictions it scores is +0.036 — indistinguishable from zero — while one indicator inside it, housing units authorised per 1,000 workers, reaches +0.742. A finding that unflattering is published because withholding it would make everything printed beside it worth less.

From research to a built project.

Four links in the chain, each one opening the work it produces. Follow any of them and you are reading the output, not a description of it.

Common questions

A division, not a spun-out entity.

The Center for Economics & Foreign Affairs — an institution studying economics and foreign affairs. Applied America is its project-development division and operates under its governance as a nonprofit.

Yes, through Applied America, CEFA’s project-development division. It brings the capital to each project it develops, assembling and committing the stack — grants, lenders, investors, foundations, and development-finance institutions — matched to the project’s stage and risk. Neither organization places securities, and nothing either publishes is an offer, a solicitation, or investment advice.

On this site. The State Development Index scores the fifty states and the District of Columbia and publishes its own correlation audit; the daily and weekly briefings are built from federal and statehouse sources; and The Cefa Brief carries signed commentary by CEFA’s authors — each piece its author’s own view rather than a CEFA position.

Development discipline and the work of delivery. CEFA’s research establishes where capacity is thin; turning that into a project with a sponsor, a site, a capital path, and a named outcome is a different craft, and it is the one this division practices.

No. It is a division, not a spun-out entity, and the arrangement is deliberate: keeping research and delivery inside one institution is what allows an outcome to be reported back against the priority that produced it.
